The GNU TeXmacs project started in 1999 as a free scientific text editor and interface for computer algebra systems. It gradually evolved into a more complete scientific office suite with a technical picture editor and tools for laptop presentations, versioning, bibliographies, etc. In our talk we will briefly present the software and pursue with a historical survey on the development of TeXmacs and the evolving design challenges.
